The Transformative Action Award seeks initiatives carried out by cities, regions and organisations that promote sustainability and inclusiveness

The first edition of the Transformative Action Award rewards projects that promote greater sustainability, resilience and inclusiveness in cities and towns through innovative mechanisms that bring about socio-cultural, socio-economic and technological changes. The Award is co-organised by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, the City of Aalborg (Denmark) and the Basque Country.

 

Cities, regions and civil society organisations can submit their applications for the Transformative Action Award until 14 July. The actions presented should be inspired by the Basque Declaration, a document adopted by the participants of the 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns, held in the Basque Country in April 2016. The Basque Declaration translates the global sustainable frameworks into 10 local agendas. Furthermore, it details 15 mechanisms that both local and regional governments, as well as civil society can use to transform their societies.

 

The Basque Declaration highlights the need for ambitious local leaders to think outside the box and find  innovative  ways to  economically and socially engage  with  civil  society  in  order to meet economic,  environmental  and  social  challenges,  and  at  the  same  time  marks  the  importance  of finding sustainable solutions that increase economic value for the benefit of the local population. The Basque Declaration also underlines the important role of civil society.

 

The jury of the Award is therefore looking for actions that are transforming towns and cities, for example, through the use of participatory funding mechanisms, the implementation of smart solutions and technologies, or the mobilisation of ideas that encourage and revitalise the local economy, among others.

 

Applications will be assessed during the summer and the shortlist will be announced in September. The Transformative Action Award Ceremony will take place in October 2017.

 

The winning application will be recognised as the Transformative Action of 2017. It will also be part of the programme of the 9th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns. All submitted applications will be showcased in the Sustainable Cities Platform database to inspire other local leaders and organisations working towards sustainability, resilience and inclusiveness.
