The MICE Industry

Taking a look at Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions

The MICE industry is one of the fastest growing segments within the tourism industry, with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) reporting on an approximate 9% annual increase on registered events taking place.

According to Ray Bloom, the IMEX Chairman, the emerging markets in Europe, such as Poland, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Latvia, are all showing increasing demand for meetings and incentive travel, and in the case of Russia, over 65% of Russian corporate meetings are held outside of Russia. Clearly the potential of the MICE industry in all its various forms, is greater now than ever before.

The activities of the Meetings Industry are an increasingly significant element in the future growth of the global economy, and provide several plus points, such as:

• Meetings are big business in their own right, and play an important role in supporting other businesses.

• Meetings promote investment, trade, communications, and technology.

• Meetings bring education and professional development to the local community, creating jobs and retaining workforces.

• It is a “clean” industry and promotes environmental quality.

• Meetings promote and support other business sectors.

• Meetings represent the “high end” of visitor spending.

• Meetings attract global expertise.

• Meetings create and spread knowledge world-wide.

• Meetings build community profile.

• Meetings promote global understanding and cooperation.

MICE – A European brief overview

IAPCO (the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers) publishes a book called "Meetings Industry Terminology" which functions as a dictionary of sorts for the meetings industry. These are the definitions as put out by IAPCO:

Meeting

General term indicating the coming together of a number of people in one place, to confer or carry out a particular activity. Frequency: can be on an ad hoc basis or according to a set pattern, as for instance annual general meetings, commitee meetings, etc.

Incentive

Meeting event as part of a programme which is offered to its participants to reward a previous performance.

Conference

Participatory meeting designed for discussion, fact-finding, problem solving and consultation. As compared with a congress, a conference is normally smaller in scale and more select in character - features which tend to facilitate the exchange of information. The term "conference" carries no special connotation as to frequency. Though not inherently limited in time, conferences are usually of limited duration with specific objectives.

Exhibition

Events at which products and services are displayed.

European Group

Following the General Assembly held in Auckland, New Zealand in February 2008, the European members of IAPCO, representing 70% of the membership, voted to create a European Group. The European IAPCO PCOs represent a formidable driving force, managing over 3400 meetings with more than 1.400.000 delegates. The Group aims to promote even further the PCO profession, to develop the branding toward the European Union, to strengthen the image of quality developed by IAPCO and to finalise the recognition of its training programme as being part of an official European training programme.
